Custom Winch Line
These two houseboats are outfitted with hand crank winches for taking the slack out of their anchor lines / shore lines. There are two aft winch stanchions, one on each side (port and starboard) of the houseboat for a total of four 3/4” custom colored double braid nylon anchor lines. The bitter end is on the boat through the winch, while a stainless steel thimble splice is on the shore for mechanical connection to the anchor / anchor rode chain using a stainless steel bow shackle.
At Denver Rope we are a custom made-to-order rigging facility and have access to not only fiber rope but also wire rope. We have a large selection of stainless steel and galvanized hardware to include thimbles, shackles, and hooks to meet your application.
Rope Fiber Materials that are most often used for general recovery and towing ropes include: Double Braid Nylon and 3-Strand Nylon both of which do have stretch / shock absorption characteristics. Some folks refer to nylon rope stretch as kinetic recovery or dynamic recovery rope. For low stretch applications polyester fiber rope can be specified.
For high performance (strong as steel wire rope of similar diameter) very low stretch applications; 12-Strand Dyneema® Winch Rope can be specified for either tow lines, recovery ropes, and winches. When using Dyneema® or wire rope, the associated hardware (thimbles) must be wire rope specified. Replace wire rope with 12-Strand Dyneema® Winch Rope.
If the rope is required to float without rope floats, then 8-strand mooring type rope (polypropylene— polyester fiber blends, 2-0” diameter minimum) or high performance 12-strand Dyneema® can be specified. 3-strand polypropylene is used only for low cost applications.

For winch applications, it is required to verify with the winch manufacture (read instruction manual) as to what type of rope should be used to include fiber material (nylon, polyester, Dyneema®, wire, etc), rope diameter, rope footage, and rope construction (3-strand heat set, 8-strand plait, 12-strand plait, double braid, etc). The rope that can be used on a windlass can usually be used on a winch.
We carry both galvanized wire rope and stainless steel wire rope in several configurations. We have on- site swage machines as to add hardware to the wire rope (thimbles and hooks).
Please consider that we do not stock pre-made / pre-assembled winch lines. We usually have the fiber and wire rope in-stock to which we cut to length and custom splice / assemble accordingly.
Some specialized custom fiber runs require a minimum production quantity TBD at time of order.

The splicer will choose the closet whipping twine color match for your lines unless otherwise specified. Consider to select a different whipping twine color for each set of lines. These are two typical examples on how these pylon hand-crank winches are applied at Lake Powell.
Some houseboats have electric wire rope winches. This one has two wire rope winches on the bow.
This houseboat has two stern located electric wire rope winches per side port and starboard. The anchor rope is 3/4” custom colored double braid nylon. Denver Rope is a custom made-to-order rigging shop and we can add splices and hardware as the customer requires.
Another view for the same application. The longer 3/4” double braid anchor lines are brought to the shore and attached to anchors and made secure. The winches tighten-up the lines.
We carry fiber and wire rope. We have thimbles, hooks, anchors, and chain to fit the customer’s needs.
